Intestinal Rehabilitation & Transplantation Program

Intestinal failure, secondary to short bowel, dysmotility or malabsorptive syndromes, is frequently managed with Parenteral Nutrition (PN). It is estimated that there are between 25,000 to 50,000 cases of long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) patients in the United States. Besides the enormous financial implications, chronic PN affects every aspect of a patient’s life, regardless of age. Chronic PN may also lead to other problems such as liver failure, central line infections, problems with venous access and dehydration.

The team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital has developed a program that brings together all the necessary components to treat the intestinal failure patient through specialized nutrition, medical and surgical strategies.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

Our multidisciplinary team of experts, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, nurses, dietitians, infectious disease specialists, stoma therapists, interventional radiologists, psychiatrists, social workers and others, work together to manage patients with intestinal failure through rehabilitation or transplantation.

You are invited to join us for our 5th annual winter course on IBD and intestinal failure March 6 - 8 , 2009 in Aspen Colorado.    This course is designed to provide the practicing gastroenterologist and surgeon with a comprehensive update of what is new in IBD diagnosis and treatment, including nutritional and surgical considerations, as well as what can be expected in the near future.
